At Sniffly Dogs, we offer 1:1 scentwork training from The Kennels on Nostell Estate near Wakefield, welcoming dogs and their people from across Yorkshire.
What Is Scentwork?
Scentwork teaches dogs to search for and locate specific scents, articles, food or toys using their incredible sense of smell. It taps into natural behaviours that dogs are already designed to use and gives them opportunities to solve problems, make decisions and work things out for themselves.
For some people, scentwork becomes a hobby they enjoy with their dog. For others, it becomes a way of helping their dog build confidence, develop focus and engage with the world differently.
Whatever brings you to scentwork, it offers the chance to spend time alongside your dog, watching them do something they were born to do.
This gives their nose somewhere to go
Scentwork takes something your dog already loves and turns it into something you can do together.
Not in a busy class. Not with pressure to get it right. But in a way that makes sense to them and starts to make sense to you too.
Some people come because their dog needs a calmer, more thoughtful way to engage with the world. Others come because they have a dog who already loves to sniff, search and explore, and they want to build an activity around that together.
It puts your dog in the lead
Scentwork is one of the few activities where your dog genuinely takes the lead. They have the nose that knows. They know what they're looking for, they work things out for themselves and they make the decisions.
Your role becomes something different. Instead of directing every step, you begin to watch more closely, trust what your dog is showing you and follow their lead. It's a different way of learning together, where your dog is given the opportunity to use the abilities they were born with.
For many dogs, that's where confidence starts to grow. They're not being corrected or held back. They're given the space to figure things out, make choices and simply be themselves. And as they grow in confidence, many owners find they do too, because they begin to understand and trust the dog in front of them in a completely different way.

What It Feels Like
Scentwork is often quieter than people expect.
There is no shouting across a field, no trying to keep up with a group, and no feeling as though everyone else knows what they are doing except you. In a 1:1 session, there is space for your dog to work things out, and space for you to watch, ask questions and understand what is happening.
As your dog searches, you start to notice details you may have missed before. How they make decisions. How they handle uncertainty. What helps them stay with the task. What changes when they are given room to think.
For many people, that is one of the biggest surprises. It is not just useful. It is enjoyable. You get to slow down, pay attention and spend time alongside your dog while they do something that makes sense to them.
