Sniffly Starter

Sniffly Starter is a good first step if you are curious about scentwork, unsure what your dog might enjoy, or looking for something calmer and more thoughtful than a busy class. It is also a gentle way for us to meet you both and begin to understand what your dog is showing us.

What happens in a Sniffly Starter

We set up a simple search area using everyday items, so your dog can search for food in a way that can be repeated at home, indoors or outside. Nothing complicated. Nothing overwhelming. And it is fun.

What you’ll start to notice

As your dog begins to use their nose, things change.

They settle into their rhythm. They focus. They start to think differently. They behave differently.

We’ll talk you through what’s happening as it unfolds, so it starts to make sense.

  • What sniffing is doing for them
  • How it affects their state (physically and emotionally)
  • Why it often helps dogs feel calmer, clearer and more able to cope

You’re not expected to get anything “right”. This is about seeing your dog in a different way.

More than just the dog

While they sniff, we talk.

About your dog. About what life looks like right now. About anything you’ve tried before.

What’s worked. What hasn’t. What you’re hoping for, even if you’re not fully sure yet.

We’ll explain the different scentwork activities we offer, how they work, what they involve and why some activities suit some dogs and people over others depending on what you’re looking for.

You can ask questions, talk things through, or just take it all in.

For both of you

This isn’t just something your dog does.

It’s something you experience together.

You’ll start to see how your dog learns. They’ll start to feel more comfortable exploring and figuring things out.

And somewhere in that, things begin to shift for both of you.

A chance to see if it fits

This session is as much about you as it is about your dog.

It’s a chance to:

  • experience how we work
  • see the space at The Kennels
  • get a feel for whether our approach suits you

There’s no pressure to commit to anything afterwards.

Some people leave knowing exactly what they want to do next. Others take a bit of time to think. Both are fine.
